Tomorrow (well, today now since it's after midnight) I'm heading off with two of my critique partners for the annual writers' conference hosted by San Diego State University. Out of all the conferences I've attended, the SDSU writers conference has been one of my favorites. I'm really excited about this conference. I'm actually one of the room monitors, so the only workshops I'll hear are the ones that take place in "my" room, but I'm still really anticipating the workshops. It doesn't really matter which workshops I monitor, I know I'll be able to take something away from every speaker.
In addition to the workshops, there's a Friday night mixer at which I'll have a chance to meet some of the editors and agents who'll be at the conference. Then, on Saturday, I have a 10-minute appointment with Hillary Rubin Teeman, an editor at St. Martin's Press. She did an advance read of the first 10 pages of my current manuscript (Shattered), so I'm looking forward to hearing her input. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping she'll want to see more of my work.
My goal at the conference is to absorb as much as I can from those around me and to get at least 3 requests for my manuscript. It will be great fun to have Stacey and Shelley there with me. Several other writers from the local Desert Rose chapter (of RWA) are also going to be at the conference, so it should be a great weekend.
Here's hoping for great new beginnings...

Hi, Susan! Hope your conference was spectacular. How did the appointment with Hilary Rubin Teeman go? Did you get the go-ahead for a partial? I tried to get an appt with her at the upcoming Dallas conference, but got on the waiting list. Does she take email queries? I hope I can query her without an agent. She just edited a book that is so much like the one I have to sell. (Grin)
Hope you sell her your book!
I had a GREAT appointment with Hilary Rubin Teeman. She doesn't take unsolicited or unagented work. I made my appointment with her because I could get an advance reading (and being published by St. Martin's would be great). She critiqued my first 10 pages and gave me great feedback. She loved my action scene and told me to find an agent. I did get 4 agent requests. Yay!
Oh, that is a great conference for sure! I hope you get a request for a full. And, of course, one of those agents!
Keep us posted.
